Reading Wick and Arrow in your Book Club

My fantasy novel Wick and Arrow, a fairy tale for grownups loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” makes for a perfect book club read due to its rich imagery and themes that are meant to be deeply pondered.

I’ve put together some discussion questions below, as well as guidance on how to invite the author to make an appearance at your book club!

Book Club Discussion Questions

  1. As children, Wick and Arrow are convinced that humans are different than giants. How does their understanding of what it means to be human shift over time?

  2. Discuss the theme of language in the story, both Wick and Arrow’s language and the Wizard Dan’s power to grant language to mute things.

  3. Arrow tells Tomás that Wick is her task. Later she says to the Wizard Dan, “Maybe that’s what’s wrong with wizards, in the end. You are no one’s task. And no one is your task.” Discuss the idea of love/friendship as a task.

  4. Several characters repeat the phrase, “We can’t unchange. It’s the one thing we can’t do.” When Arrow and Wick are reunited, Arrow says, “What’s the point of anything, if we can’t go back?” What does she want to go back to? And is it impossible?

  5. What is the main tactic the Sorceress Grell uses to control Arrow? What is the main tactic the Wizard of Seven uses to control Wick? How do they succeed in controlling them, and how are they defeated?

  6. Discuss the role of childlikeness in Wick and Arrow’s relationship and their quest to defeat the wizard and the sorceress. Hint: Arrow’s World, the toy reindeer, the game of naming their children
